INTRODUCTION

In today’s business world, EAs and support staff often are called upon to join project teams as support officers or to complete assignments themselves where complexity or size is such that something more than good organisational skills is required.

Be it the organisation of a conference, relocation of an office or the production of a publication, Project Management is a brilliant technique we all can use to get things done on time and within budget. Knowledge of the discipline of project management also enables us to contribute more effectively as a member of a project team.

OBJECTIVE

The objective of this two day workshop is to assist EAs and support staff in developing not only the key skills for successful project management but also their knowledge of the process, essential for their effective contribution as a member of a project team.

CONTENT

Topics covered in the workshop include:

  • Demystifying project management
  • Project roles and responsibilities
  • The “life cycle” of projects
  • Getting started - the critical first step
  • Developing project plans, scope and documentation
  • Using the work breakdown structure method to identify tasks
  • What Gantt charts are and how to use them to manage your project
  • How to monitor and control your project
  • Identifying possible snags and developing action plans
  • Project communication and ongoing review plans
  • Tips for avoiding project headaches
  • Presenting yourself and your project
  • Managing project working relationships
  • Managing threats to time and scope
  • Supporting the project team.

METHOD

The workshop is highly practical with a focus on results rather than technology. Instead of using simulated scenarios, participants will work on live projects drawn from their own workplace.
